Bunny Ears Cactus, or Opuntia microdasys, are perfect for novice plant parents. These cactus combine ease of care with an original appearance.
Originated in Mexican desert-like areas, they grow in dry, low humidity and sunny environments. Which means that, when indoors, they do not require much watering and will do well on their own.
Be careful when handling it though, its glochids (hair-like spines or short prickles) can easily lodge in the skin and cause irritation upon contact.
Lighting: Bright, direct to indirect sunlight.
Watering: Water when soil is dry. Allow water to drain out of the pot, and remove any excess from the saucer. During fall and winter, water lightly only every three to four weeks.
Best spot: Indoors. Close to a window where it can get direct sunlight. Can be grown outdoors during the summer.
Pet Friendly? No. Should be kept away due to the glochids.
Child Friendly? No. Glochids can cause skin irritation.
